Speaker Quinn Announces Support for Riverdale Ferry Service
Speaker Christine C. Quinn today announced her support for establishing commuter ferry service between Riverdale to Lower Manhattan. “Riverdale is ripe for a high speed ferry,” said Speaker Quinn. “Using our waterways, we can very quickly create a fast, efficient and environmentally friendly way to improve the daily commute for residents of Riverdale, reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. I am proud to support Riverdale ferry service, and will be working with my Council colleagues and the Department of Transportation on this proposal.” Many Riverdale residents who work in Lower Manhattan face commute times of over an hour, while ferry service could reduce that time to only 35 minutes. Ferry service could also address environmental impacts from residents who drive to work in Lower Manhattan, found to be over 20% of Riverdale residents in a recent study by the Campaign for New York’s Future. One option for Riverdale ferry service could be to expand upon the current Haverstraw and Yonkers route to Lower Manhattan, creating an additional ferry stop in Riverdale.
