Engel proposes study of Riverdale stop on Haverstraw-Yonkers-NYC commuter ferry

YONKERS - If you build it, more will ride.
That’s why Rep Eliot Engel, D-Bronx, said he wants to study the feasibility of adding a Riverdale stop to the New York Water Taxi that ferries Rockland and Westchester County commuters to lower Manhattan.
Engel announced his plan this morning at the Yonkers Pier, shortly before about two dozen people boarded the 7:50 a.m. ferry.
The ferry has stops in Haverstraw, Yonkers, the World Financial Center and Pier 11, Wall Street. A Riverdale stop would add 5 to 7 minutes to the route for the other passengers. But, the benefits of increasing ridership would be worth it, Engel said, because it would shorten the commute for the prospective Riverdale riders, taking their cars off the road while expanding the ferry service.
“The Hudson River is a treasure, and we ought to be using (it) to get people to and from work,” he said, adding that about 3,300 people drive from Riverdale into New York City every weekday.
Engel will begin the process of exploring federal funding for the project. Bringing the Yonkers ferry stop from proposal to fruition took about three years, he said.
